Sector Rotation Strategy Based On The Business Cycle

Investors who want to beat the market should be followers of the business cycle. The business cycle is a long-term pattern of changes in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that follows four stages: expansion, prosperity, contraction, and recession. After a recessionary phase, the expansionary phase can start again.

Business Cycle Phases

The phases of the business cycle are characterized by changing employment, industrial productivity, and interest rates. Some economists believe that stock price trends precede business cycle stages. As a result, the phases of the business cycle provide the strategic framework for economic activity and investing. The business cycle affects employees, employers and investors. For example:

·         The economy is strong; people are employed and making money. Demand for goods — food, consumer appliances, electronics, and services — increases to the point where it outstrips supply. This demand fuels a rise in prices, or inflation.

·         As prices increase, people ask for higher wages. Higher employment costs translate into higher prices for goods, fueling an upward spiral effect.

·         When prices get too high, consumers decide goods are too expensive and demand decreases. When demand decreases, companies lay off workers because they do not need to make as many goods or provide as much service.

·         Decreasing demand fuels declining prices, which means the economy is in a recession.

·         Lower prices spur demand. As demand picks up, people begin buying again, fueling the need for greater supply. The cycle goes back to the beginning.

Government Intervention

When the business cycle does not run smoothly, it can have consequences as disastrous as the Great Depression. That is why governments intervene to try to manage the economy. For example, if it appears that inflation is rising too quickly, the Federal Reserve (the central bank of the U.S. charged with handling monetary policy) may decide to raise interest rates to curtail spending. On the other hand, if the economy is performing poorly, the government may lower taxes and increase spending to spur consumption and investment.

Interest rates and the yield curve play a very important role in determining economic activity and the performance of the stock market. Higher interest rates increase the costs to businesses and individuals. Companies must pay more to borrow money for capital investments or to fund daily business operations. Higher interest rates also increase the demand for money to invest in bonds taking money that could or was invested in the stock market.

The yield curve is a plot of the yield on bonds with the same credit quality across different maturities. Implication for Investors

The business cycle has implications for markets and investors. Broadly, a recession often corresponds with a sustained period of weak stock prices, or a bear market. A healthy, expanding economy that keeps inflation from rising too quickly often corresponds with a bull market, or period of sustained market growth.

Fortunately, there are investment strategies for all parts of the business cycle, thanks to the diverse economy we have. Companies that do well when the economy is experiencing good times are called cyclical stocks. Industries that fall under this group include travel and leisure companies, airlines, consumer electronics firms and jewelry makers. Companies that make goods that are necessities, such as food and health care are called non-cyclical stocks. These stocks tend to provide more stability during an economic downturn. During an economic expansion, one should invest in cyclical stocks. On the other hand, during an economic contraction one should consider investing in non-cyclical stocks.

Sam Stovall\’s Sector Investing, 1996 states that different sectors are stronger at different points along the business cycle. Be forewarned, this is a very expensive book, however it is worthwhile, as it is the best explanation of sector rotation.

The hard part is to identify phase of the business cycle. As you might realize, this is no easy matter and many economists get it wrong. Many indicators are published on a regular basis that people use to monitor the economy. Unfortunately, there is not a simple way to make this strategic decision. The best policy is to try not to predict the business cycle, but rather to monitor the economy looking for signs that it is change in leadership. This change takes several months, so you have time to make your assessment. Keep in mind that the stock market is a leading indicator and will attempt to forecast that the economy is beginning to level off or contract and pull back. Unfortunately, these can be false indications as well.

Sector Rotation Strategy

As an investor, I seek to understand where we are in the business cycle to help guide me where to look for opportunities. However, I do not try to forecast the cycle since I realize I am no better than many economists who make it a full time job to make these predictions. Sector rotation can produce excellent opportunities and must be carefully examined when evaluating the business cycle. Just keep in mind that many investors and gurus are wrong when they claim that we are entering a new stage in the business cycle. Fortunately, one strategy works and is simple to implement.

Identify the most significant fundamental factors that influence each sector. For example, in healthcare, the aging population and expansion of healthcare coverage by the U.S. government are major drivers for the sector. These factors should help push the healthcare to be one of the top sectors. Each sector has their factors that are the major drivers. This type of review gives improves your chances to identify which sectors have the most potential and which ones do not. Using this type of analysis, you can rank each sector based on its fundamentals.

A sector tends to stay in a trend for a number of months. Moreover, when a sector starts to trend, up or down, it tends to stay in that trend for many months. Using technical analysis, you can see the trend changes in each sector, as well as, compare the performance of all the sectors over different time periods. This gives you a view of the sector that are leading and the ones that are trailing. You can also rank the sectors based on your technical analysis.

Finally, you can combine the fundamental and technical rankings into a blended order that provides a simple way to see which sectors are expected to do well and which ones are not. Hello From Vancouver -Part 2 – Wheeling Around Stanley Park

Stanley Park is Vancouver’s famous urban paradise and I knew weeks in advance that I would need to explore it in detail, preferably on a bike. So this afternoon at about 1:30 pm I set off from the UBC Campus, and navigated my way downtown by bus, taking 3 buses to get to the eastern edge of Stanley Park. This was my first chance to glance at the city of Vancouver. It is a relatively new city and according to some accounts, its origins date back to 1792 , the year when Captain George Vancouver explored this region. Most buildings downtown west of Granville Avenue were built relatively recently as Vancouver has experienced a huge building boom over the last few years. A large part of downtown is covered by modern residential skyscrapers and Vancouver’s building frenzy continues unabated. It’s evident everywhere that this is a very popular place to live.

My rental bicycle was waiting for me at a place called Spokes Bicycle Rentals, a place that had been mentioned to me several weeks ago by the Vancouver’s Visitors Association. I met one of their managers, a young sporty guy named Phil who was extremely helpful in helping me lay out my itinerary for this discovery on two wheels. We started chatting and I found out that Phil is originally from Montreal and moved to Vancouver 3 years ago. He loves the outdoors and has gotten involved in snowboarding, mountainbiking and diving and he mentioned that Vancouver is among the world’s top dive sites.

After laying out my route for me and giving me information on all the important sights along the way, Phil selected a comfortable bicycle for me that would be able to handle leisure riding as well as some mild offroading. Once outfitted I hopped on the bike and started my tour along the seawall of Stanley Park. At 20 times the size of Central Park, Stanley Park is the 3rd largest urban park in North America, and its setting is just stunning. From the east side you have a view into downtown Vancouver towards Canada Place and the cruise boat terminal. Several ocean liners were docked in town.

One of the first major sights along the bike path are the Totem Poles, imposing in their height and number. I circled around Brockton Point towards the north-facing side of the peninsula, and a stunning view towards North Vancouver and the Lions Gate Bridge opened up. As per Phil’s advice, I cycled up to Beaver Lake which is a quiet little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the seawall. It is a large pond surrounded by lush forest, covered in a water lilies. I cycled all the way around the pond and then headed back out to the seawall and quickly came to the Lions Gate Bridge which is surrounded by Prospect Point, the highest point in the park. From there I soon reached the northernmost point of Stanley Park and started cycling westwards again. Just past a single outlying rock called Siwash Rock I arrived at Third Beach that was just completely teeming with people. I bought a drink and relaxed for a while until I resumed my trip and passed a group of inukshuk builders close to Second Beach.

The crowds were intensifying and every conceivable spot on the burnt-out grass was taken up by sun-worshippers. The largest beach, located closest to the city, is English Bay Beach, replete with daytrippers. The crowds were a bit too much for me, so I crossed False Creek over the Burrard Bridge and explored Vanier Park and Kitsilano Beach. The view from the bridge is simply breathtaking. On the other side again there were thousands of people, barbequeing, sunworshiping, and picknicking.

I turned around and headed back on 4th Avenue, crossing back to downtown Vancouver via the Granville Street Bridge and headed straight across towards Canada Place and the seashore west of Burrard Street. Since my stomach was growling after about 3 hours of cycling, I returned the bycicle to Spokes and asked Phil for advice as to where to eat. He suggested an Italian place named Ciao Bella almost right across the street. I took his advice and plunked myself down on a nice patio and thoroughly enjoyed an Italian meal in the evening sunshine.

At 8 pm I was ready to head back to UBC and walked up to Robson Street, one of Vancouver’s main thoroughfares. Thousands of people were coming towards me since they were planning to catch the fireworks. The sidewalks were just totally full with people. I was walking in the opposite direction and ended up doing a quick little photographic tour of downtown, including the Hotel Vancouver. I saw a few more interesting buildings: the Vancouver Block and the Art Gallery of Vancouver.

Quite exhausted from a full day I started walking down Granville Avenue, still surrounded by throngs of people and had to wait 45 minutes for a bus since all buses were going down Davie Street to take people to the fireworks. Finally the bus came and I was listening to a bunch of teenage boys that were planning their under-age drinking escapades at the occasion of the fireworks. After a really long day I finally arrived back on the UBC campus at about 9:30 pm. Now it’s 11 pm and I can’t wait to hit the hay.

Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Mountain Bike Mechanically Sound

Taking care of your full suspension or hardtail mountain bike can be very simple and it will also help increase its mechanical life. Below is a maintenance guide that should be considered after every ride in order to help you keep your mountain bike mechanically sound. Once you perform this maintenance plan and become familiar with the process it should take you no more then 20 minutes to complete. Let’s get started:

Steps:

Remove all of the accessories (lights, bells, etc) on the top of the handlebars.

Turn the bike upside down so you can remove the wheels and inspect the drive train.

Carefully remove the front and rear wheels to give you more room to work on the bike.

Clean the drive train (derailleurs, chain, and crank) with a brush and soapy water. Also use a wet soapy rag on the chain and rear derailleur. Try to do your best to clean all moving parts.

After you clean your bike parts make sure you dry them thoroughly with a towel so they do not rust.

Wash the underside, frame and front fork, of the bike and make sure all moving parts are free of debris.

Wash your front and rear wheels by cleaning the rim, spokes and cassette. Then put the wheels back on the bike.

After you put each wheel back on the bike spin them to make sure the wheels are true and also that they do not rub on the brake components. If the wheels are not true and or rubbing on the brake components make the necessary adjustments.

After your chain is back in place turn the pedals to check the drive train. Make sure the bike pedals smooth. If you hear any strange noises coming from your wheel bearings investigate further.

Turn your bike over so it is right side up and wash the top. Do not forget to dry the bike thoroughly.

Test your front and rear brakes and make any necessary adjustments.

If applicable inspect your front and rear shocks. Make sure they are in good working order.

Thoroughly lubricate you drive train (chain, cassettes, crank and derailleur) with the recommended oil. Apply oil while moving the pedals in both directions to make sure the components are appropriately lubed.

Finally reattach any of the accessories that you removed in step one.

The steps listed above will help you keep your bike in good working order and also help you prepare for your next ride. If any mechanical malfunction is noticed during the process make sure it is addressed.
